Intended
primarily for Terriers but suitable also for Dachshunds and other breeds that
"go-to-ground" after prey, earth dog is a sport that requires dogs to
demonstrate their desire and innate ability to pursue varmints underground. The
video below shows a Dachshund being given his first lessons on earth dog.
Competitions are primarily based on how quick a dog "goes to ground," how long
she persists in her efforts to reach the critter (usually one or more rats), and
how quickly the dog responds when called away from the hunt. The dogs are not
allowed to harm the animals.
Needless to say, calling the dog away from the critter
means the dog must have a stellar recall.
