Introduction to Tracking and Nose Work

The sport of tracking works with the dog's superior nose and scenting ability. The dog follows the scent of a person, locating item(s) the human has dropped along or at the end of the 'track'. All dogs have the ability to participate in tracking but some dogs excel at it. This sport is for a person and dog who love to be outside. Tracks usually run from 400-1000 yards and cover a variety of terrain. Training is needed to teach the dog what scent to follow and how to indicate when an article is found. Handlers need to learn to 'read' their dog to see if he is on the right track.

As you watch the video below, bear in mind that this is not an AKC Tracking Test but a demonstration of a dog's tracking ability. Certain behaviors that the dog exhibits while tracking stem from his exuberance and are not behaviors that dogs need to demonstrate.
